Billerica, Massachusetts, USA
At our Business and Technology Center, we strive to continuously develop new products and technologies that help advance our customers' businesses while maintaining the highest standards in safety, health and environmental (SH&E) practices.
With more than 60 fully-outfitted research labs throughout our campus, we are the company’s head research and development (R&D) facility. We serve as the center for the exploration of new applications and technologies, and we support a wide variety of product R&D activities, including chemistry, engineering and analytical services. Additionally, we support several global functions including intellectual property, SH&E toxicology, U.S. benefits and information technology services.
With nearly 300 employees spread across more than 100 acres of land, our Business and Technology Center is one of our largest facilities worldwide. As a result, we place a strong emphasis on SH&E procedures and practices to ensure the continued health and safety of all our employees, contractors, visitors and local community members.
A Focus on R&D
Graphenes in Plastics
Leveraging our long history of experience with carbon materials, we are developing graphenes to create solutions that deliver breakthrough performance that can break trade-offs. Through in-house development and external collaborations, we have selected production routes that produce materials with unique morphologies and properties.
Faster Innovation Through Lean Prototyping
We had an idea for improving evaporative loss control from automobiles using a new type of chemically activated carbon. By employing a process called lean prototyping, which allowed us to accelerate through the building, measuring and learning stages of innovation quickly and cost-efficiently, we were able to create a workable prototype system within one week.
SH&E
Global Safety Day
Employees come together at this annual celebration to re-focus our efforts on leading indicators, proactive safety measures, and our “Drive to Zero” initiative. The day is filled with vendor safety demonstrations, wellness presentations, safety scavenger hunts and lab tours.
Improved Energy Efficiency
To improve our energy efficiency and reduce waste, we recently installed 30 variable speed drives to replace older, less efficient models. The upgrade will save more than 300,000 kilowatt-hours annually, as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 336,000 pounds each year.
New Visitor System for Improved Safety
We recently implemented a new internet-based visitor system that provides real-time information about the activity of visitors on-site. This technology helps provide a safer, more efficient process for hosting and tracking visitors and contractors to our site.
Celebrating Girls and Women in STEM
Employees from Cabot's Boston and Billerica offices recently provided inspiration to aspiring young women in STEM at the Museum of Science's third annual Women and Girls in STEM Mentoring and Networking event.
+ More
The event attracted over 275 female university students and 100 industry professionals. In addition to ample networking opportunities, the evening included a panel discussion with extremely accomplished women in STEM-related professions and several targeted breakout sessions.

Inspiring Young People to Tackle Climate Change
The Cabot Foundation has proudly served as the first corporate sponsor for the New England Aquarium’s ClimaTeens program.
+ More
Recognized with a 2016 Community Service Award from Youth Climate Action Network and a 2015 Community Leadership Award from Greenovate Boston, which has been engaging teenagers on the topics of climate change and ocean conservation since 2013. This year-long teen empowerment and education program attracts approximately 40 teenage students each year with a desire to learn more about these important topics. As part of the program, students design projects to inspire public audiences, particularly their peers, to take action in contributing to a more sustainable future. In 2017, a group of Boston and Billerica employees from different disciplines attended the students’ final presentations of their projects to show their support and offer advice on career choices in STEM fields to a highly motivated group of students eager to make a positive impact.

Student Materials Research Forum
At this annual event, local Ph.D. students present their novel solutions for some of today’s most challenging problems in the fields of chemistry, physics, chemical and mechanical engineering, and material science.
"Green Up, Clean Up"
In May, we participated in a “Green Up, Clean Up” day to help improve two local community parks. Throughout the day more than 50 volunteers planted flowers, weeded and mulched, collected litter, and edged garden beds.
“Frosty's Friends” Holiday Gift Drive
Every year we partner with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Billerica to provide local children and families in need with items ranging from craft supplies and video games to musical instruments and clothes.
Senior Center Holiday Lunch
In December, a group of employee volunteers attended a holiday celebration at a local senior center to serve some warm meals, participate in caroling and spread holiday cheer.
